Sharpen your pencils – a new school term starts this month. September used to be all about choosing pencil cases and breaking in shiny shoes, but as our ecocolumnist Jen Gale says in her school-themed special this month, it's time we started thinking about whether we really need to buy brand new, and looking at how we can reuse and recycle the things we already have. Going back to school also means the start of the daily packed-lunch prep, so we've got some nutritionist-backed advice on what to pop in your child's lunchbox, plus some tasty ideas for healthier sweet treats.
September may be a time of new beginnings, but on the veg patch it's a transition period, as early autumn produce meets the last of the high summer glut. With everything from raspberries to courgettes so abundant, it's a great time to learn the art of preserving, enabling you to fill your pantry with goodies that will see you through the winter – and they make great gifts too. Our expert tips come from Pam 'the Jam' Corbin, the River Cottage preserving tutor, who shares some of her favourite recipes for novices.
And if you need an antidote to all this healthy veg, we've got Sue Quinn's seriously tempting bakes that pair chocolate with the flavours of fruit, spices, nuts and even tea!
