All around the neighbourhood you can hear lawnmowers humming, children laughing as they play outdoors and maybe even the pop of a Prosecco cork for drinks on the patio. It's the unmistakable soundtrack of the British summer, and cracking out the barbecue is a great way to make the most of every ray.
While many of us have a primal love of cooking on an open fire, there's no need to eat caveman fare these days, and our special feature includes everything from vibrant veggie kebabs and burgers to fritters, tacos and plenty of zingy side salads. Kate Hackworthy puts a fresh spin on those Italian flavours that kids enjoy, while gardening editor Alice Whitehead reveals how to encourage youngsters to grow green fingers – and eat their five-a-day.
Whatever you're cooking this month, don't forget to save space for a special dessert. The Leon chefs have created four fruity showstopping puds – and we can promise that everyone will want seconds!
