Nothing, and I mean nothing, makes me feel more Christmassy than a pan of mulled wine warming on the stove. It smells amazing and makes you feel like a festive goddess when you've got some on hand to offer to guests. Best of all, it's unbelievably easy to make. A cupful of this and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation on the TV and I'm about as happy as I can be.

  • 1 bottle red wine (don’t use your best wine)
  • 6 cloves
  • 4–6 tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 apple, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • juice of a couple of oranges, plus 1 to slice
  • glug of ginger wine (optional)

Stage 1

Pour the wine into a large saucepan. Add the spices, sugar, fruit, juice and ginger wine, if using.

Stage 2

Warm on a low heat, but don't allow it to boil. Stir gently to dissolve the sugar, adding more if required. Serve in teacups, or by the mug it you're very thirsty!

Stage 3

Cook's tip: Buy a bottle of inexpensive red wine and accompany it with a small jar full of cinnamon sticks, sugar, nutmeg, star anise and cloves for a mulled wine Christmas present kit.
