New mobile app tracks use-by dates to help reduce food waste

Most of us have been guilty of consigning food to the bin after discovering it lurking at the back of the cupboard or fridge past its use-by date, but a new mobile app means there's now no excuse for wasting food!
The new EatBy app is designed to help householders cut down on food waste, lower food bills and play their part in reducing the 10 per cent of greenhouse gases currently attributed to food waste. Developed by husband and wife team Steffan and Barbara Lewis, EatBy allows users to scan products as they are purchased or unpacked and enter the use-by date. The app will then issue a timely reminder before the use-by date is due. Items not on the database can be entered manually and will then be made available to all app users.
'We had the idea one lunchtime after we had to throw out the food we'd hoped to eat because it had passed its use-by date,' explains Barbara. 'That led to a purge of all the out-of-date food in our kitchen. And quite frankly, we were shocked and disgusted with ourselves when we realised how much we waste.'
The app is available for iPhone and Android. Find out more at www.eatbyapp.com.
