Season's greetings one and all – welcome to our inspiration-packed festive issue! I realise that for some the thought of Christmas cooking may be a little early, but there's a lot to be said for making a list and checking it twice – especially if you do it nice and early. A well-planned Christmas Day menu should mean a stress-free day for the chef and, with this in mind, Rachel Demuth and her team have really pulled out the stops with a collection of recipes that combines the wow factor with plenty of make-ahead elements. For pudding, Chava Eichner's rather special vegan desserts should keep everyone happy too.
We know that Christmas can be a wasteful time, from buying too much food to throwing away unrecyclable gift packaging, so our eco-chef Tom Hunt is making a commitment to a zero-waste holiday this year and has created three mezze sharing dishes that celebrate root to fruit eating. If you have a tendency to buy and cook too much on special occasions, Katy McClelland provides tasty ideas for transforming leftover festive food into easy dinners; while homemade baked goodies are the most thoughtful – yet thrifty – gifts of all.
Let's not forget that despite the fanfare and lengthy festivities, Christmas is just one day, so we've also got some crowd-pleasing family supper ideas from Bake Off favourite John Whaite, plus super-quick stir-fries from wok-star Ching-He Huang.
