This is such an easy recipe and perfect to make with kids. You can use any shape or filling – try hazelnut spread or sweetened cream cheese. There's not a massive cleanup involved and they taste delicious. The pies are easily made vegan and storebought gluten-free pastry is available.
GO VEGAN: Make sure you choose a dairy-free pastry, and use soya milk to brush the top of the pies.

Ingredients

  • 375g ready-rolled shortcrust pastry sheets
  • milk, for brushing
  • 8 tsp strawberry jam

Method

Stage 1

Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment.

Stage 2

Unroll the pastry and cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Place half of your shapes on the baking sheet and spoon a teaspoon of the jam onto the centre.
Brush a little milk around the edges, then top with another heart shape and use a fork to crimp and seal the edges.

Stage 3

Brush with more milk, then use a sharp knife to cut a small slit in the top of the pastry to release the steam when baking.
Use smaller cutters to make shapes to decorate, and stick them on with a little milk.

Stage 4

Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden. Serve warm or cold.
