Chocolate Choices

This year, Fairtrade Fortnight marks 25 years of Fairtrade, and will also see the launch of an ambitious three-year campaign to introduce a living income for all. 'She deserves a living income', the new campaign, will highlight the things we might take for granted in a world where many farmers and workers overseas can't afford life's essentials.

Although Fairtrade has done much to improve the lives of many, it's not enough, fast enough, with many people still underpaid and exploited, which means they can't afford basics such as food, education and housing. Europe is the world's biggest importer of cocoa yet 70 per cent of that cocoa is produced in West Africa, and 43 per cent of worldwide output comes from the Côte d'Ivoire, where one in six of the population is employed in the cocoa sector. Yet a shocking 60 per cent of all cocoa farmers still live below the poverty line.

Fairtrade is the only certifier to provide a safety net of a minimum price for farmers in times of global price decline, plus a premium – an extra amount of money that goes direct to farmers to invest in business or community projects of their choice.

Fairtrade Fortnight is encouraging everyone to look for the Fairtrade Mark when buying chocolate – as well as other imported products – which means you can enjoy a taste of chocolate indulgence and still support a move towards a living income for farmers. Find out more at fairtrade.org.uk
