Celebrating Suma's 40th birthday!

Happy Birthday Suma!

In 1975, the Bay City Rollers were top of the charts in the UK, while over in the States, childhood friends Paul Allen and Bill Gates were launching a company called Microsoft.
Back in Leeds, a man called Reg began selling wholefoods around the North of England, delivering his products when he should have been delivering clothes, because he was so passionate about natural foods. In 1977, he sold the business to seven employees and Suma the worker co-operative was born. All over the UK, wholefood shops were springing up, thanks to a growing number of like-minded people who shared the same passion for good food.
Stepping forward 40 years, Suma is now the UK's largest worker co-operative and biggest single-pay employer in Europe, something that is of immense pride to all its workers. Now stocking over 7,000 vegetarian products, Suma sells to customers throughout the UK and overseas.
Today, Suma is proud to be named Leading Co-operative of the Year, a prestigious award at the Co-ops UK's annual congress, and the team believes it's a perfect way to celebrate four decades of being in business and as a worker co-op – in fact, it's the icing on the (birthday) cake. To celebrate, look out for Suma's Strength in Numbers ale, brewed in Yorkshire using organic hops and malt, for an aromatic, punchy and smooth vegan ale. Cheers!
