Meet the maker: Nuts about butters

Pippa Murray was training for a marathon around five years ago, when she first came up with the idea for Pip & Nut. 'Peanut butter has always been (and still is!) one of my favourite post-run snacks. I realised there was a gap in the market for an accessible, natural nut butter without added palm oil and refined sugars that could appeal to a younger demographic than the existing brands. The idea kept nagging me and I decided to give it a go – as if I didn't, I knew someone else would!'
Pippa also felt there was the potential to introduce people to other nut varieties too. 'Products like almond butters really hadn't hit mainstream supermarkets,' she says.
'I was excited at the prospect of introducing a new, playful brand and developing new flavour combinations like our Coconut Almond Butter.'
With no real experience of the food industry – she was working for the Science Museum in London – Pippa started experimenting in her kitchen at home, burning out several blenders in the process! Like any fledgling entrepreneur, Pippa admits she's had a few sleepless nights since launching, and says her lack of experience meant it was particularly challenging to find the right manufacturing partner to enable her to scale up the business, but there have also been some magical moments along the way, providing much-needed reassurance that she wasn't completely 'nuts' to launch her own brand!
'Seeing the very first jar of almond butter roll off the production line was pretty special,' she says. 'Similarly, seeing the jars on the shelves of Selfridges, our first stockist, was such an awesome feeling. In terms of business, winning the Sainsbury's account is a massive highlight and it was a real turning point for the company. When I got the email telling me they had decided to start stocking Pip & Nut I nearly fell off my chair I was so surprised!'
Pip & Nut offers a range of nut butter combinations and limited edition flavours. 'Our Coconut Almond Butter is very popular and people tell us they can get through a jar in one sitting!' she laughs.
'I have to admit that my personal favourite has to be the Crunchy Maple Peanut. I just love the sweet and savoury contrast. Having said that, I have been eating a lot of our new limited edition Chocolate Coconut Hazelnut Butter recently; it really hits that mid-afternoon sweet craving… and after-dinner craving!'
