Meet the Maker: The Natural Touch

When Rossi Cartlidge's daughter suffered from bad nappy rash, she started experimenting in her kitchen to see if she could create a soothing balm from natural oils and butters. When it worked, she started on recipes to tackle her own facial flare-ups. Her natural and eco-conscious beauty brand launched with her Bottom Dream Nappy Balm and Balancing Face Cream, and 10 years later Handmade Naturals is still going strong, with an ever-expanding range.
'I wasn't a chemist and had no training in making beauty products, but I do enjoy cooking and baking,' says Rossi. 'But the biggest challenge initially was trying to find out the legal requirements for beauty products and getting a lab to test them. Over the years we've had to learn how to scale up our production. Back then I was making just a couple of jars of a cream at a time, only just enough to meet demand.'
Despite growing interest in their products, Rossi says they are committed to not using machines in their production. 'We are really trying to stick to our handmade ethos,' she says. 'Very few completely handmade ranges are as comprehensive as ours, and we are proud to be 100 per cent natural – not many brands can say that.'
Rossi says that product development is always customer-led and starts with simple ingredients. 'Whatever people ask for, we deliver. For example, recently we've started making many unscented products, as sensitivities to essential oils are fairly common. We tend to use tried-and-tested stars such as shea and cocoa butter in combination with a variety of oils to create products that are naturally rich in vitamins and nutrients, with no parabens, harsh detergents or petrochemicals,' she says. 'We've been using coconut oil right from the start and also use argan oil, in both hair and face care products. More recently I read great things about kahai oil, so we decided to incorporate it in our new beard oil and face serum.'
What started as a kitchen-table enterprise has surpassed all Rossi's expectations, and Handmade Naturals has consistently stayed true to the principles that first inspired it. 'I still use the Balancing Face Cream that I developed almost 10 years ago. I also love the Unscented Hand & Body Lotion with almond and plum – it's one of those products that if I ever end up on a desert island it's all I'd want to have with me!'

All Handmade Naturals products are certified vegan, with the exception of lip balm as these contain beeswax, and are available from www.handmadenaturals.co.uk.
